Carmen
A selection of images from the project that is still a work in process
My partner Carmen has lived with rheumatoid arthritis since her mid-forties and over the years this “silent” condition has manifested in mis-shaped fingers, pain, stiffness and difficulty in many tasks, even the simplest ones, and overflows into frustration, anger and, in addition, of feeling tired, clumsy and slow.
Over a million people suffer from this disease in Mexico; 75% are women. Worldwide this figure rises to 100 million, but there is little projection from a personal or artistic point of view. The hope is that this project will be, in its small way, a representation of the people who live with this condition by highlighting Carmen’s daily life with the rheumatism while maintaining a successful academic career, demonstrate the normality and the frustrations of living with this illness, and hopefully act as an acknowledgment of her strength and perseverance.
We started this project during the COVID pandemic while working from home and where the majority of the images were taken.
